Horizontal gene transfer

The transfer of genetic material between organisms outside of parent-to-offspring inheritance. Common in bacteria (via plasmids, transduction, or transformation) and significant in early evolution. Makes the "tree of life" more accurately a web, especially among prokaryotes. Responsible for rapid spread of antibiotic resistance.
