Witchcraft
In the anthropological sense established by E. E. Evans-Pritchard's fieldwork among the Azande, a belief system that explains the specific timing and target of misfortune — why this person, at this moment — operating alongside, not in place of, ordinary mechanical causation. Evans-Pritchard's granary example shows the Azande fully understanding termite damage as the mechanical cause of a collapse while witchcraft answers a separate question mechanical causation was never designed to address.
