You were probably five years old the first time you did it.
Your teacher told everyone to stand. You stood. She told you to put your hand over your heart. You put your hand over your heart. Then you said words you didn't understand, in a language you were still learning to read, about a concept -- allegiance -- that literally no five-year-old can define.
And you did it again the next day. And the next. And every school day for years.
Nobody asked if you agreed. Nobody explained what you were promising. Nobody said, "Hey, you have the right to sit this one out."
You just... did it. Because everyone else was doing it. Because the teacher said to. Because that's what you do in the morning, like brushing your teeth.
Here is a question worth asking: Why does your country need you to make a promise before you can tie your shoes?
That's not a trick question. It's not anti-American. It's the kind of question that people who actually think for themselves ask all the time. And it's where we're going to start.

Did you notice your brain filling in the words automatically, like a song you've heard a thousand times? That automatic recall is the point. It's not an accident. It's the entire design.
When something lives that deep in your memory, it stops being a choice and starts being part of you. And that's exactly what the people who designed the ritual wanted.
Who Wrote This Thing, Anyway?
The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by a man named Francis Bellamy. He was a Baptist minister and a magazine writer, and here's where the story gets interesting.
Bellamy was a Christian socialist -- someone who believed that Jesus's teachings demanded economic equality. He'd been fired from his church in Boston for preaching sermons about how capitalism was failing the poor. So he took a job at a magazine called The Youth's Companion, which wanted to sell American flags to schools. Bellamy's assignment: write something kids would recite while looking at those flags.
Read that again. The Pledge of Allegiance was, in part, a marketing campaign. Bellamy wrote it to help sell flags.
Bellamy originally wanted to include the word "equality" in the Pledge -- "with liberty, equality, and justice for all." But he knew that the political establishment of 1892 would never accept that word, because it might imply equality for Black people and women. So he dropped it.
The Pledge was edited before it was even published -- not to make it more accurate, but to make it more politically palatable. The words you've been saying your whole life are a compromise. Somebody decided what truths were safe enough to put in children's mouths.
That doesn't make the Pledge evil. It makes it human. Somebody wrote it for a reason. It didn't fall from the sky. It wasn't carved in stone by the founders.
George Washington never said it. Abraham Lincoln never said it. It was written by a guy working for a magazine, 116 years after the Declaration of Independence.
Here's another fun fact. The original Pledge came with a salute. Bellamy instructed kids to extend their right arm straight out toward the flag, palm down. If you're picturing something uncomfortable right now, you're not wrong. That salute looked exactly like the one the Nazis used forty years later. Congress quietly changed it to the hand-over-heart gesture in 1942, because Americans were watching newsreels of Hitler rallies and noticing the resemblance. The Pledge didn't just change its words. It changed its body language because the world changed.
And here's the biggest twist: the original Pledge didn't include the words "under God." Those two words were added in 1954, during the Cold War. The United States was terrified of communism. The Soviet Union was officially atheist. American politicians decided that adding "under God" would make America sound different from the Soviets.
Think about what that means. The Pledge was modified to fight an enemy. Not to express an eternal truth. Not because the founders forgot to mention God.
It was changed because politicians in the 1950s wanted a weapon in the propaganda war against the Soviet Union, and they decided that weapon was the mouths of children.
So the Pledge changed. Because politics changed. Because fear changed what powerful people wanted kids to say every morning.

What Is a Ritual?
Let's name what the Pledge actually is: a ritual.
A ritual is an action you repeat in the same way, at the same time, for a reason that's more about feeling than doing. Brushing your teeth is a habit -- it removes plaque. But standing, placing your hand on your heart, and speaking in unison with thirty other people? That's not about information transfer. Nobody learns anything new from the Pledge on the 500th repetition. That's not about dental hygiene. That's about making you feel something.
And what you feel -- unity, belonging, patriotism -- is real. Those feelings aren't fake just because they were engineered. A movie can make you cry real tears even though the story is scripted. A song can give you real chills even though the chord progression was calculated. Rituals produce real emotions. But real emotions aren't the same as real evidence. Feeling patriotic doesn't prove your country is right. Feeling spiritual doesn't prove a preacher is honest. Feeling like part of a group doesn't prove the group is good.
Rituals aren't bad. Blowing out birthday candles is a ritual. Singing your team's fight song is a ritual. Doing a special handshake with your best friend is a ritual. High-fiving after a good play. Saying "bless you" when someone sneezes. Clinking glasses before a toast. Rituals create belonging. They make you feel like part of a group. They're one of the oldest technologies humans have -- older than writing, older than agriculture, older than cities.
But here's the thing about rituals that you need to tattoo on the inside of your brain:
The people who CREATE rituals are not the same people who PERFORM rituals.
Somebody designs the ritual. Somebody else does it on autopilot. The designer knows exactly why the ritual exists. The performer just feels the feelings.
This matters because throughout history, the most powerful people in the world have understood one thing better than anything else: if you can get someone to repeat an action without thinking, you can shape what they believe without arguing.
No debate needed. No evidence required. Just stand up, put your hand over your heart, and repeat.
Rituals in the Wild
The Pledge is the example you know best. But rituals are everywhere once you start looking.
North Korea requires every home to display portraits of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. Citizens bow to the portraits daily. School children sing songs praising the Dear Leader before lessons. The rituals start in preschool and never stop. By the time a North Korean citizen is an adult, the emotional connection to the regime isn't political. It's as automatic as breathing.
Nazi Germany had the Hitler salute. Every greeting, every classroom, every public event. Say "Heil Hitler" enough times, and the name stops sounding like a person and starts sounding like a prayer. That was the point.
Sports fandom runs on rituals too -- rally caps, lucky jerseys, the seventh-inning stretch. These are harmless and fun. Nobody is using the wave at a baseball game to install a dictatorship. But they show how rituals create a feeling of unity and belonging so powerful that grown adults will wear face paint in public without embarrassment.
The difference isn't the ritual itself. The difference is who designed it and what they get out of it. A tailgate party before a football game benefits the people doing it. A loyalty oath in a dictatorship benefits the dictator. Same mechanism. Very different purpose.
Your job is to learn to ask: "Who designed this ritual? And who benefits?"
The Bellamy Salute and the Lesson of History
Let's linger on that salute detail for a moment, because it teaches us something important about how rituals evolve -- and how something that feels completely normal can look completely different when the context changes.
For forty years, American kids did the Bellamy salute -- right arm extended, palm down -- without thinking twice. It was patriotic. It was normal. Then the Nazis adopted an almost identical gesture, and suddenly the same physical motion meant something completely different to the rest of the world.
Congress changed the salute in 1942. But here's the interesting question: did the salute become wrong, or was there always something strange about asking millions of children to extend their arms in synchronized obedience to a flag? The Nazis didn't invent the creepy part. They just made the creepy part visible.
This pattern shows up constantly in history. A practice seems perfectly normal until you see it from the outside. Slavery seemed normal to slaveholders. Denying women the vote seemed normal to the men who voted. Segregation seemed normal to the people who weren't segregated. In every case, the practice felt natural to insiders and monstrous to outsiders (or to future generations looking back).
Rituals have the same quality. They feel natural when you're inside them and bizarre when you step outside. If an alien visited Earth and watched a room full of children facing a piece of colored cloth and chanting words in unison, what would that alien think was happening?
The point isn't that the Pledge is as bad as Nazism. That's absurd and insulting. The point is that "everyone does it" is not evidence that something is good. It's evidence that something is a ritual. Whether the ritual is good or harmful depends on what it does and who it serves.
Choosing to Believe vs. Being Trained to Believe
Let's do a quick experiment. Think about something you believe right now. Anything. "Pizza is the best food." "My mom is a good person." "Dogs are better than cats."
Now ask yourself: When did you decide to believe that?
For most of your beliefs, the honest answer is: you didn't decide. You absorbed them. From your family. From your friends. From your school. From your neighborhood. From your country. From the internet. From the air. Like a sponge dropped in a bucket of water -- you didn't choose the water. You just soaked it up.
This is the single most important idea in this entire course, so let's say it clearly:
Most of what you believe, you didn't choose. You inherited.
That doesn't mean your beliefs are wrong. Your parents might be right about a lot of things. Your community might have great values. But there's a huge difference between:
- "I looked at the evidence and decided this is true" (choosing)
- "Everyone around me says this is true, so I never questioned it" (training)
The first one is thinking. The second one is programming. And most of us are running on programming we never installed ourselves.
Here's a test. Think about your political beliefs. Are they suspiciously similar to your parents' political beliefs? If your family watches Fox News, do you lean conservative? If your family watches MSNBC, do you lean liberal? If your family doesn't watch any news, do you not care much about politics?
That's not a coincidence. It's inheritance. You didn't research every political issue and independently arrive at the same conclusions as the people who raised you. You absorbed their conclusions like a sponge absorbs water, without even noticing the sponge was getting wet.
This doesn't mean your parents are wrong. It means you haven't checked yet. And checking is the whole point of this course.
Religion is another big one. A kid born in Alabama is overwhelmingly likely to be Christian. A kid born in Saudi Arabia is overwhelmingly likely to be Muslim. A kid born in India is likely to be Hindu. A kid born in Japan is likely to grow up with a mix of Shinto and Buddhist traditions. Are all of those kids independently evaluating world religions and making rational choices? Obviously not. They're inheriting the beliefs of their geography, just like they're inheriting the language and the food.
This raises an uncomfortable question: if you'd been born somewhere else, would you believe different things? The honest answer is almost certainly yes. And that doesn't make your beliefs wrong -- but it does mean they need checking, the same way you'd check whether your parents gave you accurate information about anything else.

Introducing Priors: The Stuff You Already Believe
Scientists and mathematicians have a word for the beliefs you carry around before you encounter new information. They call them priors.
Think of priors as the background assumptions your brain makes before it looks at any evidence. You already have priors about everything -- whether strangers are trustworthy, whether police are helpful or dangerous, whether rich people earned their money or got lucky, whether the news is reliable. You didn't sit down one day and carefully choose these assumptions. They accumulated, like dust, from every experience, conversation, and media message you've absorbed since birth.
Your priors are like the glasses you're already wearing when you look at the world. They're invisible to you, but they change what everything looks like.
Here's how priors work. Imagine you have a bag with 100 marbles in it. You can't see inside. Someone tells you, "Most of the marbles are blue." That's your prior -- the thing you believe before you start checking.
Now you reach in and pull out a red marble. Interesting. Does that mean the bag is full of red marbles? Probably not. Your prior said "mostly blue," and one red marble isn't enough to overthrow that belief. So you update a little. "Okay, there are some red marbles. But probably still mostly blue."
You pull out another red marble. And another. And another. Now you've pulled ten marbles, and seven of them are red. A reasonable person starts changing their mind. "Maybe this bag isn't mostly blue after all."
That process -- pulling out evidence and adjusting what you believe -- is called updating your priors. Mathematicians call it Bayesian reasoning, after Thomas Bayes, an 18th-century Presbyterian minister who figured out the math in the 1700s. (Yes, a minister invented one of the best tools for thinking rationally. Irony noted.) But you don't need the math to understand the idea:
When you get new evidence, you should change your mind a little. The more evidence piles up, the more you should change it.
Sounds obvious, right? Pull out enough red marbles, and you stop believing the bag is mostly blue.
Here's the thing about priors that makes them so sneaky: strong priors are harder to update than weak ones.
If someone casually mentioned the bag might be blue, you'd change your mind pretty fast when the red marbles showed up. That's a weak prior. Easy to update.
But if your parents told you every day since birth that the bag is blue, if your church teaches that the bag is blue, if all your friends believe the bag is blue, and if questioning the blueness of the bag means everyone you love will be disappointed in you -- well, now that prior is basically welded to your identity. No marble is going to budge it.
This is why some beliefs feel impossible to change even when the evidence is overwhelming. The belief isn't just an opinion. It's a load-bearing wall in the structure of your life. Pull it out, and you're afraid the whole building collapses.
Here's a practical example. If you grow up in a household that teaches you evolution is a lie, and your church teaches it, and your friends believe it, and your identity as a faithful person depends on it -- then encountering evidence for evolution isn't just a science lesson. It's a threat to your family relationships, your social circle, your sense of self, and your understanding of what happens when you die. The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. But the cost of accepting it, in a community built around rejecting it, is staggering. That's why smart, well-meaning people can look at mountains of evidence and not budge. The prior isn't protecting an idea. It's protecting a life.
But here's what actually happens with real people and real beliefs: they pull out red marble after red marble after red marble... and keep insisting the bag is blue.
Why? Because human brains have bugs. And those bugs have names.

The Five Brain Traps
Your brain is amazing. It can do calculus, write poetry, and figure out that your friend is mad at you from a single text message. But your brain is also full of shortcuts that worked great for survival on the African savanna and work terribly for figuring out the truth in a complicated world.
These shortcuts are called cognitive biases. Think of them as brain traps -- patterns your mind falls into automatically, without your permission, even when you know better.
There are dozens of documented brain traps. Psychologists have cataloged over 180 of them. We're going to focus on the five that matter most for not getting fooled. These five show up in every scam, every cult, every propaganda campaign, and every manipulative relationship. Master these five, and you'll catch 90% of the tricks people use on you.
Brain Trap #1: Confirmation Bias
What it is: You notice evidence that supports what you already believe. You ignore evidence that contradicts it.
How it works: Let's say you believe your school's basketball team is the best in the league. When they win, you think, "See? Best team." When they lose, you think, "Bad ref," or "They were tired," or "That doesn't count." You explain away the losses instead of updating your belief.
Real-world example: In 2020, millions of Americans believed the presidential election was stolen. When courts threw out every lawsuit -- over 60 cases, many decided by judges appointed by the losing candidate -- believers didn't update. They said the courts were "in on it."
When election officials from both parties certified the results, believers said those people were corrupt too. When Republican governors confirmed the results, believers said those governors were traitors. Every piece of evidence against the theory became evidence for the theory -- because it "proved" how deep the conspiracy went.
That's confirmation bias on steroids. The prior became so strong that no amount of red marbles could change it.
A smaller example: Open your social media feed. Notice the stories that make you feel good. Now notice: are you fact-checking those? Or just the ones that make you uncomfortable? Most people fact-check their opponents and share their allies without blinking. That's confirmation bias dressed up as critical thinking.
How to catch it: When you hear news that makes you think "I knew it!" -- pause. That feeling of satisfaction is confirmation bias saying hello. Ask yourself: "What evidence would change my mind?" If the answer is "nothing," you're not thinking. You're defending.
Confirmation bias is especially dangerous online because algorithms feed you more of what you've already engaged with. Click on one article questioning a vaccine, and your feed fills with anti-vaccine content. Click on one video about a conspiracy theory, and the next ten suggestions are deeper into the rabbit hole. The algorithm doesn't care if the content is true. It cares if you click. And you click on things that confirm what you already believe, because confirmation bias is the click machine's best friend.
Brain Trap #2: Authority Bias
What it is: You believe something because an important-seeming person said it.
How it works: A doctor says a medicine works. A president says the economy is strong. A pastor says God wants something specific. A celebrity says a product is amazing. A YouTuber with a million subscribers says the election was rigged. Your brain thinks: "This person has a fancy title / big following / confident voice, so they must be right."
Real-world example: In 1961, psychologist Stanley Milgram ran a famous experiment at Yale. He told volunteers to give electric shocks to a person in the next room. The shocks were fake, but the volunteers didn't know that. A man in a lab coat -- "the experimenter" -- told them to keep shocking, even when the person in the next room screamed in pain and begged them to stop.
65% of volunteers gave the maximum shock. Not because they were evil. Not because they enjoyed hurting people. Because a guy in a lab coat, with an authoritative tone, told them to continue. The costume and the confidence were enough.
Authority bias is the reason cult leaders, dictators, and con artists always dress the part. Lab coats. Military uniforms. Expensive suits. Religious robes. The costume is the argument.
A smaller example: When a celebrity tells you to buy a product, are they an expert on that product? No. They're a famous person being paid money. But the ad works because your brain processes fame as authority. LeBron James knows about basketball. That doesn't mean he knows about the insurance company paying him to smile at you.
An important clarification: Authority bias doesn't mean "never trust experts." A doctor who spent twelve years studying medicine probably knows more about your health than you do. The trap isn't listening to experts. The trap is accepting a claim because an authority said it, without looking at the evidence behind it. Good authorities show their work. Bad authorities say "trust me."
How to catch it: When someone in a position of authority makes a claim, ask: "Would I believe this if a random person on the street said it?" If not, the authority is doing the persuading, not the evidence.
Here's a modern twist on authority bias that Milgram couldn't have predicted: algorithmic authority. When Google puts a result at the top of your search, you treat it as more authoritative than the result on page two. When TikTok shows you a video with millions of views, you treat the creator as a kind of authority. But Google ranks results based on clicks and backlinks, not truth. TikTok promotes videos based on engagement, not accuracy. The "authority" is an algorithm optimizing for attention, not for getting you the right answer.
Brain Trap #3: Social Proof
What it is: You do something because everyone else is doing it.
How it works: You walk past two restaurants. One is empty. One has a line out the door. Which one do you want to eat at? The one with the line. You don't know if the food is good. You're using other people's behavior as a shortcut for your own decision.
Real-world example: Social media runs on social proof. A tweet with 50,000 likes feels more true than the same tweet with 3 likes. But truth doesn't care about likes.
A million people can share a lie. They often do. The phrase "going viral" literally comes from the word for disease. Things spread because they're contagious, not because they're true.
A historical example: In the 1950s, "everyone" in the American South believed segregation was natural and right. Polls showed overwhelming support among white Southerners. If you lived there, social proof told you that keeping Black and white people apart was just how things worked. The fact that millions of people agreed didn't make it true. It just made it hard to see the truth through the crowd.
Social proof is why witch trials happened. One person makes an accusation, and suddenly "everyone" sees signs of witchcraft. In Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, social proof helped kill twenty people. Not because witches were real. Because belief is contagious.
How to catch it: When you see "everyone" doing or believing something, ask: "What's the actual evidence?" Popularity is not proof. History is littered with things "everyone knew" that turned out to be dead wrong -- the earth is flat, bloodletting cures disease, women can't do math.

Brain Trap #4: Sunk Cost Fallacy
What it is: You keep doing something because you've already invested time, money, or effort -- even when quitting is the smart move.
How it works: You're watching a terrible movie. You've been watching for an hour. You want to leave, but you think, "I've already spent an hour on this. I might as well finish." That hour is gone whether you stay or leave. But your brain treats it like a reason to keep going.
Real-world example: This one is huge for understanding why people stay in bad situations -- bad relationships, bad jobs, bad belief systems. "I've been going to this church for twenty years. I can't leave now." "I've donated $5,000 to this cause. If I stop, that money was wasted." "I've been believing this my whole life. I can't be wrong now."
The sunk cost fallacy is the brain's way of protecting your past self from your present self. It whispers, "If you change your mind, everything you did before was a mistake." And nobody wants to feel like they wasted their life.
Here's the truth the sunk cost fallacy hides from you: changing your mind is not a waste. It's growth. Every scientist who ever discovered something new first believed something wrong. Every person who ever improved their life first admitted that what they were doing wasn't working. Changing your mind isn't a failure of the past. It's a victory of the present. The only real waste is staying wrong because you're too proud to update.
A historical example: The United States spent twenty years in Afghanistan (2001-2021). At many points, military and political leaders knew the mission wasn't working as planned. Classified reports, later leaked in the Afghanistan Papers, showed that officials had serious doubts going back to the early 2000s. But the cost of admitting failure -- the lives lost, the trillions spent, the political careers invested -- made it almost impossible to change course. "We've come too far to quit now" kept the war going for years after many insiders knew it wasn't winnable.
Sunk cost isn't just a personal trap. It operates at the level of nations.
How to catch it: Ask yourself: "If I were starting fresh today, with no history, would I make this choice?" If the answer is no, your past investment is a trap, not a reason.
Brain Trap #5: FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
What it is: You make decisions based on fear of being left behind, not based on whether the thing is actually good.
How it works: Everyone in your class is on a new app. You don't really want it. But the fear of being the only one who doesn't have it is worse than the thing itself. So you download it. Not because you chose to. Because fear chose for you.
Real-world example: FOMO drives everything from cryptocurrency bubbles to cult recruitment. In 2021, during the crypto boom, people poured their savings into coins they didn't understand because "everyone was making money" and they were terrified of being left behind. When the crash came, billions of dollars evaporated. The people who lost the most were the ones who jumped in last, driven by the fear that the train was leaving the station.
Cult recruitment uses the same lever. "Join us now before it's too late." "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." "Everyone is getting in on this." "The awakening is happening right now -- don't be left behind." The deadline is the manipulation. Real opportunities don't need countdown timers.
How to catch it: When something feels urgent, slow down. Ask: "What happens if I wait a week?" If the answer is "nothing bad," the urgency was manufactured. The best decisions are almost never made in a panic.
How the Brain Traps Team Up
These five traps don't usually work alone. They hunt in packs.
Think about a kid getting recruited into an online community that pushes extreme political ideas. The process might look like this:
- Social proof: The kid sees a group of funny, confident people online who all agree with each other. They seem cool. They seem like they have the answers.
- FOMO: The group acts like they're part of a secret club that "gets it." You want in before the door closes.
- Authority bias: The group has a leader -- a YouTuber, a streamer, a podcaster -- who speaks with absolute confidence. He never says "I think." He says "I know."
- Confirmation bias: Once you're in the group, you start noticing evidence that supports the group's views everywhere. The world seems to confirm what they told you.
- Sunk cost: After six months of watching the videos, sharing the memes, and arguing with outsiders on behalf of the group, leaving feels like admitting you wasted half a year of your life.
Five traps. One recruit. No physical force was used at any point. Nobody grabbed the kid. Nobody locked a door. Nobody said "you can't leave." The kid walked in voluntarily, stayed voluntarily, and now can't find the door -- not because it's locked, but because they've been convinced that the outside world is worse than the room they're in.
This is not hypothetical. This is how online radicalization works. We'll dig much deeper into this later in the course. For now, just notice: the traps aren't separate problems. They're a system.
Brain Traps in Everyday Life
Before we go any further, let's make sure you don't think brain traps are only about cults and conspiracies. They're running in your life right now, in totally ordinary situations.
Shopping: "Limited time offer! Only 3 left in stock!" That's FOMO, manufactured to make you buy before you think. Amazon shows you how many people bought the item (social proof) and highlights five-star reviews (confirmation bias -- you read the good reviews and skip the bad ones).
School: You're more likely to believe a teacher who seems confident, even if they're wrong. That's authority bias. If your whole friend group thinks a particular class is boring, you'll probably think so too, even before you've attended. That's social proof.
Family arguments: Ever noticed that during a family argument, everyone remembers the events differently -- and each person's memory conveniently supports their side? That's confirmation bias filtering your memories in real time.
Video games and apps: Gacha games and loot boxes use every brain trap simultaneously. FOMO (limited-time events), sunk cost (you've already spent $50, might as well spend $60), social proof (everyone in the guild has this item), and authority bias (streamers and influencers showing off their pulls).
Friend groups: You might not join a group because you agree with it. You might agree with a group because you joined it. Once you're socially invested in a friend group, your brain starts adjusting your beliefs to match the group's, not the other way around. This isn't disloyalty. It's social proof doing its thing below your conscious awareness.
Advertising: The entire advertising industry is a brain trap delivery system. Every commercial you've ever watched was designed by psychologists and marketers who understand exactly which biases to trigger. The "before and after" photo is authority bias (an expert endorses this product). The "millions of satisfied customers" line is social proof. The "limited time offer" is FOMO. The fact that you recognize the brand from childhood is familiarity bias -- you trust what's familiar, even if you've never evaluated whether it's actually good.
You're not paranoid for noticing this. You're awake.
Politics: Brain traps run every election campaign. Political ads use authority bias (celebrity endorsements), social proof (yard signs, rally crowds), FOMO ("this is the most important election of our lifetime" -- every single time), confirmation bias (selective statistics that make one party look good), and sunk cost ("I've voted for this party my whole life"). Campaign strategists study cognitive biases professionally. They know exactly which buttons to push. You're not a citizen to them. You're a target.
Conspiracy theories: Every conspiracy theory is a brain trap delivery system. They start with a real grievance -- people in power do sometimes lie and cover things up. That part is true. The trap is what comes next.
Confirmation bias: every piece of counter-evidence "proves" the conspiracy. Social proof: millions of people believe it. Authority bias: a charismatic leader or alternative "expert" pushes it. FOMO: "wake up before it's too late." Sunk cost: once you've told everyone the moon landing was fake, admitting you were wrong means admitting you spent three years being fooled.
All five traps. One conspiracy theory. We'll dig much deeper into conspiracy theories later in this course.
The brain traps aren't exotic. They're the water you swim in. The goal of this course is to teach you to see the water.

Why Smart People Fall for Dumb Tricks
Here's something that drives people crazy when they first hear it: intelligence does not protect you from brain traps.
In fact, smart people are sometimes more vulnerable. Why? Because smart people are better at constructing arguments to defend what they already believe. They don't use their intelligence to find truth. They use it to build better walls around their existing beliefs.
Psychologists call this motivated reasoning. You start with what you want to be true, then work backward to find reasons. The smarter you are, the better your reasons sound. But they're still backward.
Here's an example that might sting. If you're a fan of a particular political party, you probably think the other party lies a lot. And they probably do. But does your party also lie? Almost certainly. Do you notice those lies as easily? Almost certainly not. Your intelligence doesn't fix this. Your intelligence helps you construct elaborate explanations for why your party's lies are actually context-dependent nuances while the other party's lies are brazen deceptions. Same behavior. Different spin. That spin is motivated reasoning in action.
Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, two Israeli psychologists who basically invented the study of brain traps, spent decades showing that even experts -- doctors, economists, judges -- make predictable, systematic errors. Kahneman won the Nobel Prize in Economics for this work, despite not being an economist. (That detail alone should make authority bias a little nervous.)
Elizabeth Loftus, a psychologist at the University of California, proved that memory itself is unreliable. She showed that you can implant false memories in people by asking leading questions. Witnesses to car crashes "remembered" broken glass that didn't exist, simply because someone asked, "How fast were the cars going when they smashed into each other?" versus "How fast were they going when they contacted each other?" The word "smashed" created a false memory of broken glass. One word. One false memory. In people who were trying their best to be accurate.
In another study, Loftus convinced adults they had been lost in a shopping mall as children -- an event that never happened. About 25% of participants "remembered" the fake event, some in vivid detail. They described the experience, named the person who found them, described their emotions. None of it was real. Their brains had manufactured a complete memory from a suggestion.
Your brain doesn't record reality like a camera. It reconstructs reality like a storyteller. And storytellers edit. They cut scenes that don't fit the narrative. They embellish scenes that do. They create continuity where there was chaos. This isn't a flaw -- it's how brains work. But it means you can never fully trust your own memory, which is a humbling and essential realization.
Leon Festinger, another giant of psychology, studied what happens when reality contradicts belief. He coined the term cognitive dissonance -- the uncomfortable feeling you get when you hold two contradictory ideas at the same time. Like, "I'm a smart person" and "I just fell for a scam." Those two ideas can't both be true, so your brain resolves the tension by changing one of them. Usually, it's not the flattering one that gets changed.
Festinger infiltrated a doomsday cult in the 1950s to study this up close. The cult predicted the world would end. It didn't. Instead of admitting they were wrong, the members decided their faith had saved the world. The failed prediction made them believe harder. Festinger's conclusion: the smarter the person, the more creative the excuse.
Robert Cialdini, a professor at Arizona State University, spent his career cataloging the techniques of persuasion. His book Influence documents how salespeople, con artists, and politicians use the exact brain traps we've been discussing. Cialdini didn't invent these tricks. He just revealed that they've been used -- systematically, deliberately, and effectively -- for centuries.
The point isn't that smart people are stupid. The point is that intelligence without self-awareness is just a faster engine with no brakes.

The Dunning-Kruger Twist
There's one more piece of the puzzle that explains why smart people get fooled, and it's related to a famous finding in psychology.
In 1999, psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger published a study showing that people who are bad at something tend to overestimate their ability. Someone who knows nothing about medicine feels confident giving medical advice. Someone who just learned chess thinks they could beat a master.
But here's the part people usually miss: the Dunning-Kruger effect also works in reverse. People who are genuinely skilled tend to underestimate how easy it was for them and overestimate how skilled everyone else is. An expert assumes everyone else has done the same reading. A smart person assumes everyone else is reasoning just as carefully.
How does this connect to brain traps? Like this: smart people often assume they're too intelligent to be manipulated. "That propaganda works on other people, not me." That assumption -- that confidence -- is itself a brain trap. It makes you lower your guard at exactly the moment you should be raising it.
The people who are hardest to fool aren't the smartest people. They're the people who know -- really know, deep in their bones -- that they can be fooled.
That knowledge keeps the alarm system running. Confidence turns it off.
So here's a paradox to sit with: the moment you feel certain you can't be manipulated is the moment you're most vulnerable to manipulation. Humility -- real, honest humility about the limitations of your own brain -- is the best defense you have.
The Marble Bag Revisited: When Priors Go Wrong
Let's go back to our marble bag.
Remember: you pull out evidence, and you update what you believe. Simple. Except here's what the five brain traps do to that process:
- Confirmation bias makes you count the blue marbles and "forget" the red ones.
- Authority bias makes you believe someone who says "trust me, it's mostly blue" instead of checking for yourself.
- Social proof makes you look at what everyone else says about the bag instead of reaching in.
- Sunk cost makes you keep believing "mostly blue" because you've been saying it for years.
- FOMO makes you panic when someone says "everyone who matters knows it's blue."
Put all five together, and you get a person who is pulling out red marble after red marble -- and genuinely, sincerely, from the bottom of their heart -- believes the bag is blue.
This is not stupidity. This is the human brain working exactly as designed, in a world far more complicated than the one it evolved for. Your ancestors didn't need to evaluate competing news sources or detect propaganda from foreign governments. They needed to run from lions and trust their tribe.
The brain traps that kept your ancestors alive are the same ones that keep you from thinking clearly today.
A Real Marble Bag: The Flat Earth Example
Let's make this concrete with a real case.
In 2015, almost nobody talked about flat earth. By 2019, according to a YouGov survey, about 2% of Americans said they believed the earth was flat, and another 5% said they "weren't sure." That's millions of people who looked at centuries of evidence -- photos from space, physics, airplane routes, the existence of time zones -- and said, "I'm not convinced."
How? Watch the brain traps work:
The prior: "Powerful people lie to you." This is actually a reasonable prior. Powerful people do sometimes lie. The tobacco industry lied about cancer. The government lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. So "the powerful lie" is a decent starting belief.
Confirmation bias: Every time a real conspiracy is revealed, flat earthers say, "See? They lie about everything. Why not the shape of the planet?"
Authority bias (inverted): Instead of trusting mainstream authorities, flat earthers trust counter-authorities -- YouTubers who claim to have "done the research." The authority bias is still operating. It's just pointed at a different authority.
Social proof: Flat earth communities are tight-knit and supportive. They share content constantly. When you're surrounded by people who believe it, doubt feels socially dangerous.
Sunk cost: Once you've told your friends and family the earth is flat, once you've argued with strangers online, once you've built an identity around it -- admitting you were wrong means admitting all of that was for nothing.
FOMO: "Wake up before it's too late. The truth is being suppressed."
The flat earth movement is funny. But the mechanism behind it is deadly serious. The same brain traps, working in the same configuration, can be used to recruit people into political extremism, religious cults, financial scams, and violent movements. The content changes. The software doesn't.
Here's a sobering detail: in the documentary Behind the Curve, a group of flat earthers designed their own experiment to prove the earth was flat. They bought a $20,000 laser gyroscope. They set it up carefully. They ran the test.
The gyroscope showed a 15-degree-per-hour rotation -- exactly what you'd expect on a spinning, spherical Earth.
Their response? They didn't update their beliefs. They decided the gyroscope must be malfunctioning. They planned more experiments to explain away the result.
Red marble. Right there in their hands. And they put it back in the bag and kept insisting it was blue.
That's the power of priors. That's why this unit matters. The brain traps we've been discussing aren't just academic concepts. They are active, right now, in your head, filtering everything you see and hear. They operated in the minds of flat earthers holding a gyroscope. They operate in the minds of voters, consumers, students, parents, and yes, in your mind and mine.
The only defense is awareness. You can't turn off the traps. But you can learn to recognize the feeling of a trap activating -- that little burst of certainty, that satisfying click of evidence seeming to confirm what you already believe, that rush of belonging when your group agrees. Those feelings are the traps firing. And once you learn to spot them, they lose some of their power.
Not all of their power. Some. But "some" is enough to change your life.
So What Do You Do About It?
You can't eliminate brain traps. They're hardware, not software. They're baked into the way your neurons fire. But you can build habits that catch them before they take over.
Here are three tools you can start using today:
Tool #1: The Opposite Test. Before you decide something is true, make yourself argue the opposite. Really argue it. Not as a joke, not sarcastically, but genuinely. Find the best evidence against your own belief. If you can't even imagine what that evidence would look like, you've got confirmation bias running the show. Scientists do this all the time -- they try to disprove their own hypotheses. It's called falsification, and it's the engine of all reliable knowledge.
Tool #2: The Source Test. When someone tells you something, ask three questions: (1) How do they know? Not "they seem smart" -- how do they actually know? Did they see it? Read a study? Hear it from someone? (2) What do they gain if I believe them? Money? Votes? Followers? Social status? (3) What would someone who disagrees say? If you can answer all three, you're thinking. If you can't, you're trusting.
Tool #3: The Update Test. Pick a belief you hold strongly. Now finish this sentence: "I would change my mind about this if ______." If you can't fill in the blank, your belief isn't based on evidence. It's based on identity. And identity doesn't update.
These tools won't make you immune to brain traps. Nobody is immune. Kahneman himself, the man who spent fifty years studying cognitive biases, said he still fell for them regularly. The difference is that he noticed. He caught himself. He corrected course.
That's the goal. Not perfection. Just noticing. Just pausing. Just asking one extra question before you accept something as true.

Tool #4: The Alien Test. Imagine you're an alien visiting Earth for the first time. You have no cultural knowledge, no priors, no loyalty to any group. You see a behavior, a belief, a practice. From that alien perspective, does it make sense? Or does it only make sense if you've been trained to accept it?
The alien test is basically the opposite of social proof. Instead of asking "does everyone do this?" you're asking "if nobody did this, would it still make sense?" It's a powerful way to strip away the cultural programming and see things fresh.
Try it on the Pledge. An alien watches a room full of children stand, face a piece of cloth, put their hands on their chests, and chant in unison every morning. The alien asks, "Why?" And the answer -- "because everyone does it, because we've always done it, because the teacher says to" -- suddenly sounds less like a reason and more like a confession.
The Pledge, One More Time
Let's go back to where we started. The Pledge of Allegiance.
Now that you know about rituals, priors, and brain traps, the Pledge looks different. It's a ritual designed by a specific person for a specific purpose. It installs a prior ("this nation, under God, indivisible") before you're old enough to evaluate it. And it uses social proof (everyone doing it together) and authority bias (the teacher leading it) to make the installation seamless.
Does that mean you should refuse to say the Pledge? That's your call. Legally, you have the right -- the Supreme Court ruled in 1943 (West Virginia v. Barnette) that no student can be forced to recite the Pledge. You can sit. You can stand silently. You can do whatever you want.
But the point of this unit isn't to tell you what to do about the Pledge. The point is to give you the ability to see it for what it is: a designed experience intended to produce a specific emotional and ideological result.
Once you can see that about the Pledge, you can see it about everything. Advertisements. Political speeches. Social media algorithms. Religious services. Group chats. TikTok trends. Every single one of these things is, at some level, a designed experience. Somebody built it. Somebody benefits from it.
Your job -- the job of someone who thinks for themselves -- is to ask: "Who built this? Who benefits? And do I agree?"
What This Course Is (and Isn't)
Before we close this unit, let's set some expectations.
This course is not going to tell you what to believe. It's not liberal or conservative. It's not atheist or religious. It's not trying to make you trust or distrust any particular institution.
This course is going to give you tools. Specifically, it's going to give you tools for:
- Recognizing when someone is using brain traps to manipulate you
- Spotting the difference between genuine communities and control systems
- Evaluating claims based on evidence rather than emotion, authority, or popularity
- Understanding how cults, scams, propaganda, and radicalization actually work
- Thinking for yourself instead of thinking what you've been trained to think
In the coming units, we'll look at how religion gets turned into a business (Unit 2), how cults actually work (Unit 3), how propaganda rewrites history (Unit 4), and how the internet has supercharged all of these old tricks with new technology.
We'll name names. We'll look at real cases. We'll examine real people and real organizations, because vague warnings about "some people do bad things" are useless. You need specific examples to build specific defenses.
Some of this will make you uncomfortable. Good. Discomfort is the feeling of a brain trap being challenged. If everything in this course feels comfortable, either we're doing it wrong or your brain traps are stronger than we thought.
One promise: we will always show our work. Every claim in this course can be checked. Every name we name is a real person you can look up. Every event we describe is documented in multiple sources. We're not asking you to trust us. We're asking you to check. That's the whole point.
