Authority
Power that is recognized as legitimate by those subject to it, granting the holder the right to command, make decisions, or enforce rules. Authority differs from raw power because it carries perceived legitimacy. Sources include tradition, expertise, democratic consent, or institutional position. Critical thinkers ask: Who granted this authority, and is it justified?
