Cultural Appropriation
The taking of cultural elements — music, dress, ritual objects, imagery — across a power gradient between cultures. Communication scholar Richard Rogers's four-part typology distinguishes cultural exchange (reciprocal borrowing between roughly equal parties), cultural dominance (a dominant culture imposing its forms on a subordinated one), cultural exploitation (a dominant culture extracting a subordinated culture's forms without consent or compensation), and transculturation (forms so thoroughly hybridized that no single owner-culture can be assigned).
