Culture-Bound Syndrome

A recognized pattern of symptoms, causes, and course that a specific cultural group identifies as a coherent illness but that does not map cleanly onto another medical system's diagnostic categories. The concept cuts both ways: susto (Latin America) and hikikomori (Japan) are classic non-Western cases, but Type A personality and premenstrual syndrome are equally culture-bound American cases once defamiliarized — a symmetry the DSM-5 acknowledged by replacing its separate 'culture-bound syndromes' glossary with a broader 'cultural concepts of distress' framework applied to all diagnoses.
