Defection

In a Prisoner's Dilemma, the individually dominant choice that undermines mutual cooperation — testifying against a partner, doping instead of riding clean, undercutting a rival's price. Defection does not require betraying an ally in a literal sense; it names any choice of the individually rational option that, taken by every player, produces a worse outcome for the group than mutual cooperation would have.
