Fieldwork
The sustained, direct, in-person research that produces an ethnography. Bronisław Malinowski's two years living in a Trobriand village established participant observation as fieldwork's founding method, displacing the earlier practice of 'armchair anthropology,' in which colonial officials and traders passed along secondhand reports to theorists who never personally verified them.
