Emic
The categories, meanings, and logic that people inside a culture use to understand their own lives, as distinct from the etic perspective an outside analyst imposes. Bronisław Malinowski's founding claim for participant observation was that grasping the emic perspective — 'the native's point of view' — was anthropology's distinctive contribution, one armchair theorizing from a distance could never supply.
