Participant Observation
Extended, immersive fieldwork in which a researcher lives within the community being studied — learning the language, eating the food, attending both ordinary life and ceremony — rather than observing from a distance through an interpreter. Bronisław Malinowski's two years in the Trobriand Islands, born partly of a wartime diplomatic accident, established the method as anthropology's non-negotiable standard for evidence.
