Neanderthal
An extinct hominin species that lived in Europe and western Asia from approximately 400,000 to 40,000 years ago. Svante Pääbo's sequencing of the Neanderthal genome (2010) revealed that most non-African humans carry 1-4% Neanderthal DNA, proving interbreeding between the species.
