Snowball Earth
The hypothesis, championed by Joseph Kirschvink, that Earth was almost entirely covered by ice during several episodes in the Proterozoic era (approximately 720-635 Mya). May have been triggered by the Great Oxygenation Event's reduction of atmospheric methane. The end of Snowball periods may have contributed to the Cambrian explosion.
