Great Oxygenation Event
The dramatic rise in atmospheric oxygen approximately 2.4 billion years ago, caused by cyanobacteria evolving oxygenic photosynthesis. Transformed Earth's atmosphere from anoxic to oxygen-rich, caused the first mass extinction (of anaerobic organisms), and is recorded in banded iron formations and other geological markers.
