Cyanobacteria

Photosynthetic bacteria that evolved oxygenic photosynthesis approximately 2.4 billion years ago, fundamentally transforming Earth's atmosphere by producing free oxygen. Responsible for the Great Oxygenation Event — Earth's first mass extinction for anaerobic organisms, and the prerequisite for all subsequent aerobic life.
