Banded iron formation
Ancient sedimentary rock formations consisting of alternating layers of iron oxide and silica, dating primarily from 3.8 to 1.8 billion years ago. They record the Great Oxygenation Event: free oxygen produced by cyanobacteria reacted with dissolved iron in the oceans, precipitating iron oxide layers.
