Oxygenic photosynthesis

The form of photosynthesis that uses water as an electron donor and produces oxygen as a byproduct. Evolved in cyanobacteria approximately 2.4 billion years ago. The most important metabolic innovation in Earth's history — it oxygenated the atmosphere and made aerobic life possible.
