Authoritarianism
A political system, leadership style, or psychological disposition characterized by strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom, limited political pluralism, and the suppression of dissent. As Spitale uses the term in Chapter 5, it is the institutional endpoint of a population sorted into tribal in-groups and out-groups by propaganda — once communicative discourse with the out-group is foreclosed, the only remaining option is rule by force, and authoritarianism is what that rule looks like in operation.
